IF A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS....

FINALLY! I actually feel better today after nearly three weeks of being poorly - hooray! Even though the symptoms did go a bit last week, it's been the lack of energy that's been a b*&^%r. The only thing I felt like doing was a little light crafting!

Do you remember I'd been 'volunteered' onto the WI Banner committee? Well, one day, I just had the feeling that I should crack on with it.

Look at the state of that desk! I'd just pulled out various bits of fabric to see what was needed for the panel - the floor was even worse! And armed with interfacing and bondaweb, I just set to, thanking Wipso and Twiglet for their great lesson on 'how to' a couple of years ago. And it just all came together, nothing went awry - isn't it odd how some projects go swimmingly and others are like drawing teeth? This was the former.

The name of my WI (Womens' Institute) is Pembrey & Burry Port, encompassing the two communities that are situated side by side. The lighthouse is THE feature of Burry Port, it's quite a cute little building on the harbour.

The other building is St Illtyd's Church in Pembrey - it's an early 12th century building which has certainly seen some history, including me singing in the choir as a youngster, Gordon and I getting married there and both our boys being christened.

I left the church quite plain as the panel will be passed on to Belinda, who is going to do embroidered details and beading.

I added the black metalwork railings though!

Ta Dah!!

After embroidering etc, the panel will be sewn onto a blue banner and have coloured braid or cord sewn on to hide the raw edges. This is the first project I've ever attempted like this - I hope the ladies like it.

I needed a little zippy bag in which to keep some of my banding stuff:

Love these colours - fresh and zingy - just what's needed to make me happy in these dull grey days.

Just a quick little make but it'll be very useful and save me rummaging around the bottom of my backpack to find important stuff! The pegs and magnets are for holding down music on my stand (believe me, the merest breath of wind will see your sheet music soar into the sky!), the Vaseline keeps my slides lubricated (Twiglet, I can hear you sniggering from here!) and the valve oil is brilliant for keeping everything working as it should. If only there was something similar for humans :-D

Sorry I've gone on a bit today but I enjoyed making the two items and wanted to share!

Have a good week xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Happy WOYWW. I love love love your contribution to the banner. That is the sort of sewing project I intend to try with my new machine - one day! Great little bag too. I need some valve oil by the way - feeling very stiff and sore all the time with this dark/dreary weather we have had. Should be brighter today and tomorrow, so hoping to get out into town to visit the craft shop - I NEED some clear embossing powder, so a good excuse to spend a little bit of money in there. Got my tax bill, which is higher than I thought - so my planned spoiling of myself will have to wait for another month. Ali x #7

Oh where do I start? Firstly it’s so good to hear you’re feeling better.
Your sewing for the panel is amazing....I love it Jan and am sure the others will too. Love the fabrics you’ve made your little bag out of. As for the Vaseline and valve oil I think no amount of it would stop this old body from creaking.
Hope you have a fun week.

So glad to hear you're feeling a bit more human again Jan. Amazing projects; you've created a fabulous starting point for further embellishment. I do hope we get to see the finished banner. I confess, I was sniggering too at the lubricated slides comment lol. Happy WOYWW Sarah #12

Hello Jan. I am so pleased you are feeling better. Your part of the panel is fabulous- love it. I can't wait to see it all finished. Cute bag as well. I have not been poorly like you but just generally yuk. Now have a tummy bug (sigh) could also do with something to keep everything working as it should! Have a happy day. Anne x #14

Morning Jan - erm, not only Twiglet doing the laughing! I too have page-holder-downerers! You don't need a mere breath of wind to lose your sheet music on a modern keyboard! You just need a little extra touch of the keys, and the music stand just can't cope. Yes, I actually got to play the new(well, fairly new now) keyboard at church last Sunday. Great enjoyment all round as we lifted the roof off with praise worship!!!
Your banner panel is lovely - well done - came from the heart!
Take care girl. God bless.

Hi Jan, The WI are going to be thrilled with the panel. Me thinks you will be asked to do other sewing projects:)

The little zip bag is lovely. I tend to keep my eyes open in charity shops for them, as they are handy.

Your bannerwork is inspired and I’m sure everyone will be delighted. Like you, I had flu and then an infection which floored me all over Christmas and New Year. I’m still lacking in energy but am still trying to decutter stash to good homes before I start anything new. Catriona

Hi Jan, love the photo of you busy sewing! And I'm glad you are feeling well enough to sew again - flu takes such a lot out of you so being tired and lacking oomph is only to be expected. The applique church and lighthouse are fantastic. Lovely job! I'm sure the ladies of the WI are going to be pleased with them. The little zipper bag is gorgeous too though the contents are, well, just a little unusual. I was expecting lippy and mascara. Hope you have a good week and that your energy level improves. It wasn't just Twiglet sniggering at the vaseline LOL! That panel is beautiful and I love how you ladies work on it as a team! It would be lovely to see it all beaded up. The little zippy bag looks so fun and very practical too! Nice to see you in action as well next to your sewing machine. Love your daylight lamp - I've been looking at the desk version of similar lamps, but couldn't decide which one to get, but I will buy one one of these days - sooner rather than later as it is during these dark months that I would need them most! Thanks so much for visiting, Jan! If I can help you with your paper flowers, please let me know! I could cut some shapes for you to assemble - I've just ordered another mix and match flower die set, which is neater than the "tattered" variety. There are some truly amazing paper flowers on Pinterest, aren't there? I was bowled over when I first started looking at them and just had to try them! Have a happy week, Jan! Hopefully that nasty bug is all gone now! xx zsuzsa #18

What a cool post and i'm sorry, not just Twiglet sniggering..me too!! Lovely to see you in action at your machine. I am dusting off my poor neglected baby next week if I am still off, I am going to nail a few projects that are unfinished. After my op last year I lost my sewing mojo. I love the WI banner, so clever including the 2 key buildings, you are so very talented. Claire #30

It's lovely to be back with you all and glad you are feeling a bit more like it, Jan. Sounds like you've all had a miserable time of it. Hope everyone else are on the mend too. Sending hugs to you all. Love your gorgeous makes, the lighthouse is just amazing. I must get to grips with my machine this year. Thanks for your lovely comments.

Thank you for your visit, Jan, and for your good wishes for my hospital appointment tomorrow. Yes, I was pleased that I could kill 2 birds with one stone and not have to arrange transport for a second one! Hopefully I'll have some positive news tomorrow. My hubby is doing an excellent job with all the paperwork - that stuff does my head in.

Oh how well you know me - I was sniggering at the tin of Vaseline before I got to the bit about your slides! Jan, your banner collage is really fab - what a great design and so beautifully carried out - I am sure it will be well loved. Please show us the finished banner when it has been "tweaked". xx your sniggering little crafty buddy Jo.

Your banner looks amazing, I love how you created the waves on the sea. I also love that you just whipped up a zippy bag. A plastic food bag from IKEA would be the best I could do!

Jan, that panel is FABULOUS!! I love it and I know it will be a great addition to the banner! Likewise that is the cutest zippy bag! Love those colors! Blessings for your week! Felicia #26

Hi Jan
You took me back a few years with this post which is fabulous. Love the lighthouse with the rails and the church is super, the doorway is one of my favourite bits.
I must find the flag I once made, along with a friend, years ago - a labour of love when I was travelling to college in Manchester on the bus!
Hope you soon feel much better - almost rang you the other day - will do soon.
Hugs, Neet xx

Oh I definitely need some human valve oil .... love that banner Jan, it looks fabulous and it's brilliant that you create the design and then your friend does the embellishment, what a wonderful shared project. Re your request on my blog for diecuts for WI cards - definitely will keep that in mind whilst rummaging in my drawers over the weekend! :o) I know I have a lot of toppers and diecuts and such that aren't really my taste but I've hung on to cos I thought they'd make nice cards, so I would be very happy indeed to send them to you and free up space. I think I still have your address, but if not will give you a shout once i've finished rummaging. And btw there's no way I will let you pay the postage, happy to send them if you can make good use of them. Happy WOYWWday Annie C #17

Sorry I’m late! The panel is fantastic Gal, you did a great job. Now I get why you were so happy to just have the mood come upon you and it all happen as you intend. Wonderful. I’m a bit itchy to see what others will do with it now, it’s a bit like a Chinese whisper!!

Thank you for your visit earlier, sorry I am so late returning the visit. Our little houses are put away now and I'm trying not to wish the year away!
Love the panel you have created, hope you will show us the finished banner. I used to make some lovely ones for our Church, so much pleasure for yourself and all who see it.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
